The company said more than 300 movies are currently available atm.mSpot.com including new releases such as “The Reader,” “The Soloist” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and it expects to have thousands by year’s end.

MSpot said Mobile Movies, which is currently only available in the United States, works with four US carriers and with more than 30 different mobile phones including the Apple iPhone, the Blackberry and Android devices.

Movies from mSpot are streamed directly to the viewer’s device on demand and begin playing immediately. They can be stopped and started on command.

Apple’s iTunes also offers movies for the iPhone or iPod Touch but they need to be downloaded to a computer first and then synched with the mobile device.

A single full-length movie from mSpot costs 4.99 dollars and can be purchased with a credit card. The company also offers a Movie Club membership.

MSpot recommends that Mobile Movie users have an unlimited data plan with their phone carrier.

Outsmarting rivals in ‘smartphone’ wars also post in techblog September 28, 2009

MANILA, Philippines–Nokia is out to lay claim on who’s the boss in the “smartphone” wars as it rolls out its new mobile devices—one of which a Nokia exec firmly described as “a computer, not [just] a phone”—beginning next month.
-
At its annual product showcase held earlier this month in Stuttgart, Germany, the mobile-phone maker presented two new additions to its N Series of “smartphones,” the N900 and the N97 Mini, the latter a streamlined version of the highly successful N97. Nokia World 2009 also saw the debut of the company’s first entrant into the netbook market, the Nokia Booklet 3G, and a couple of music phones, the X3 and X6.

While the world’s largest mobile phonemaker claims to have the biggest chunk of the “smartphone” market at 45 percent, even bigger than its rivals, Apple and Research in Motion, combined, the general perception is that the iPhone and the BlackBerry are the market leaders in the category. Nokia is bent on rectifying that notion. Original complete article is here

Nvidia’s $200 Netbook: “Better Than Atom” September 27, 2009

“This is what we think a netbook should be,” says Bill Henry. As the general manager of Nvidia’s Mobile Internet Products (hint: driven by the Tegra chip), he’s supposed to say stuff like that. So I roll my eyes a little. But after seeing a late prototype that’s nearly ready for market and getting a little hands-on time with the Mobinnova N910, I’m inclined to agree.

The first claim made by Henry: By itself, the Tegra processor is more powerful than the Atom on its lonesome. No arguments there. Web-based mapping sites ran and rotated images where a base-line Atom machine would slowly chug. Streaming HD video from Hulu and YouTube ran pretty much stutter free on the 8.9-inch screen. Heck, even the Zune HD can output 720p video to a monitor. So, as you can gather, it gives you a pretty solid experience. Just don’t expect to play hardcore games with this device as opposed to the Nvidia big brother, the HP 311, which runs on the Ion platform. Though, it will play your garden variety Web flash games. Equally impressive: Henry says that device can get up to 10 hours of run time.

Not too shabby considering how amazing small the machine is (1.84 pounds, 9.1 by 7.3 by 0.8 inches). I also found the design pretty intriguing. All the ports (including USB and HDMI) hide behind the N910 in the hinged battery. You can opt to have the battery jut down to tilt up the machine (and expose the ports) or slide it in for when you need to stow in a tight space. It’ll support WiFi and 3G capabilities.

The Keyboard, while small, is nice (probably a 75% full keyboard) – and the touchpad is a little tricky (the left and right clicks are underneath the pad, so you depress on the strike zone), but over all I’m starting to get the early stages of netbook gadget lust.

So I had to ask Henry point blank: “What’s the price and when’s it coming out?” He confirms that it is in a late prototype stage and that he’d expect the machine to come out for $200…but he isn’t ruling out the possibility that the Mobinnova people might try and ask for more. I hope not because the HP Mini 311 is offering a good deal of power for only $400. Make this a cheap machine and it will sell out. Fast.

Wonder what the pricing will be in the Philippines? Read the original posting by clicking this link http://www.pcworld.com/article/172038/nvidias_200_netbook_better_than_atom.html?tk=nl_dnx_h_crawl

The BlackBerry Curve 8520

MANILA, Philippines – If you have ever used a BlackBerry then you fully understand that it is one smartphone that is hard to give up.

“If you like your office with you 24/7,” said Jim, my techie and always-connected young entrepreneur friend. “Grabe, the boss never leaves me alone. And then there are my Twitter and Facebook accounts, which I need to keep updated all the time.”

I smiled as Jim spoke. I understand very well where he was coming from. After all, I am a BlackBerry loyalist.

“As we have made BlackBerry services available to retail customers early this year, we are excited to bring another unique BlackBerry smartphone to Filipino consumers. They have been very receptive to the idea of being able to easily access the important people and information they want on the go. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone will be especially attractive to younger people, who want to carry their music, videos and games with them, along with their e-mail and access to social networking sites,” said Menchi Orlina, Globe’s chief marketing officer. Ericsson unveiled its new mobile broadband module specifically designed to bring high-speed wireless connections to a new generation of consumer electronic devices. As demand increases for the freedom and mobility which embedded broadband enables, Ericsson’s new consumer electronics (CE) module signifies a great leap towards an all-communicating world.

Intended for immediate implementation in e-book readers, GPS navigators, and other popular portable consumer electronics, the CE module has the potential to be integrated into media players, durable goods and more, as embedded mobile broadband becomes part of everyday life. Already with commercial wins in the consumer electronics space, Ericsson’s modules are enabling manufacturers to embrace and capitalize on the connected lifestyle.

The new Ericsson CE module, named C3607w, gives device manufacturers the flexible, self-contained connectivity solution needed to create the next generation of intuitive and innovative consumer electronics by decoupling the processor and connectivity design. At only a third of the size of previous Ericsson modules, the C3607w is packaged with an extensive operator approval program and outstanding IPR protection which eases integration and shortens time to market.

“This is an exciting time for Ericsson and the industry as we announce our new CE module,” said Mats Norin, Vice President, Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules. “Our vision is clear: all devices that can be connected will be connected as the technology required for an all-communicating world is now here. This module opens a new realm of possibilities and innovation for the consumer electronics industry as they can now easily and cost-effectively integrate the power and speed of mobile broadband in today’s and tomorrow’s devices.”

Unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), the C3607w module highlights progress in Ericsson’s collaboration with Intel announced last year to bring HSPA mobile data solutions to Intel’s “Moorestown” platform-based MIDs. Although compatible with multiple platforms, the CE module represents progress in Ericsson’s and Intel’s aim to bring together the telecom and computing industries and extend the mobile broadband ecosystem to consumer electronics.

The C3607w is Ericsson’s smallest, lightest and fastest mobile broadband module to date, capable of reaching uplink speeds of 5.76 Mbps with up to 40% less power consumption than previous modules. Equipped with Ericsson’s wake-on-wireless feature, enabling remote wake-up commands from sleep mode, the CE module will also enable a new set of applications for security and messaging.

“With our fourth new module in twelve months, Ericsson’s momentum in the consumer electronics industry is strong,” Norin continues. “What was once thought to be years away is today a reality. We look forward to seeing new and innovative devices focusing on the end-user experience by utilizing the freedom of embedded mobile broadband.”

“At Intel we are working to bring the benefits of PC-like, rich and visually-appealing Internet experiences to a range of mobile devices including next generation handhelds and netbooks,” said Pankaj Kedia, director of global ecosystem programs In Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group. “The combination of high performance and low power innovation in Intel’s next generation “Moorestown” platform, combined with Ericsson’s industry-leading 3G modules, represents an exciting combination and will go a long way in helping to realize this vision.”

Ericsson’s C3607w consumer electronics module will be available in the first quarter of 2010.

SMART BRO plug-it internet annouces per minute rate promoJuly 5, 2009

I wrote last week in my Telecommunications blog that why does SMART use a complicated formula to charge you in 30 minute blocks rather than charging you actual per minutes used. If you sign in at 8:15 for example, you only really get 15 minutes before the 8:30 blocks comes up.

They should just charge by the minute and be finished with it, why do they treat customers this way?

I am happy to say in full page ads this week, SMART Bro has annouced that per minute charging is now being offered. But its only for those that register at

http: smart.com.ph/connect
and the promo only lasts for now until October 15, 2009
