Are there readers in GUAM or Saipan? Or are you going to Guam or Saipan? Globe has a deal for you!!

Overseas Pinoys can now easily get in touch with their families with the launch of the Kababayan SIM, the first-ever Pinoy GSM SIM in Guam & Saipan.

A product of the partnership between Globe and IT&E, the Kababayan SIM allows Guam- & Saipan-based Pinoys to call their loved ones in the Philippines who are on Globe or TM for only US$17.5 cents per minute. And with the ITXT text service, Globe subscribers can now text their families

-
and friends in Guam on their IT&E wireless phones for as low as P0.50 per international text.

To celebrate the launch of the Kababayan SIM, two free shows top billed by renowned singer-host Billy Crawford were held at the two biggest malls in Guam, the Agana Shopping Center and the Micronesia Mall. The mall shows were also used as venues for our fellow kababayans in Guam to pledge their support for victims of typhoon Ondoy. This was made possible with the assistance of the Philippine Consulate General office in Guam.

Globe Marketing Head for Overseas Filipino Communities Alan Supnet said the launch of the Kababayan SIM is a milestone as it is the only Pinoy GSM SIM available in Guam and Saipan.

“We are proud of the Kababayan SIM as the newest addition to the products and services of Globe worldwide. This SIM does not just give the best rates for local calls in Guam & Saipan but it also gives them special rates when calling a Globe or TM number in the Philippines. Globe together with our partner, IT&E, is continuously working to provide more products and services for our kababayans.”

Through Globe’s worldwidest services, the Filipino family remains connected with their loved ones wherever they may be. Globe continues to pioneer in efforts to provide new and affordable products and services for Pinoys working or living abroad via its partnerships with overseas telecommunication companies. Google’s gift: Free WiFi in 47 airport, maybe Philippines will be next? hehe November 10, 2009

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Google is planning to foot the bill for WiFi at 47 of the nation’s airports for the rest of the year, beginning Tuesday. With some travelers spending more time on the ground in airports than on planes during the busy flying season, now seemed an especially fitting time to offer up the perk, Google said.
-
The list includes the international airports in Miami and Orlando, which are among the world’s 30 busiest airports, as well as five others in Florida. Travelers through smaller airports, such as Montana’s Billings and Bozeman,
will also benefit.
-
“This is one of our holiday gifts to our users, and when you connect, we also hope you’ll take the opportunity to try some of the latest Google products,” the company said in a statement.
-
Upon signing in, users will be asked if they want to set Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) as their homepage or try the Google Chrome browser. The company is also running a charity campaign to raise money for three nonprofit groups: Engineers without Borders, One Economy Corporation and Climate Savers Computing Initiative. When Google WiFi users first log on, the landing page will offer them the option of donating to the organizations. Google will match donations of up to $250,000 per airport.
-
Google has inked other free WiFi deals. It already offers free wireless Internet to its hometown of Mountain View, Calif., and last month it partnered with Virgin America to give the airline’s customers free access to
Gogo’s Inflight Internet.
Both the airport WiFi deal and the Virgin America arrangement will end Jan. 15, after the holiday rush subsides. While Google’s move to offer free wireless in airports is an original twist, several companies are already running similar sponsorship campaigns on domestic flights.

E-commerce giant eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500) said it will provide free WiFi through Gogo on more than 250 domestic Delta Airline flights during the busiest travel week of the year, over the Thanksgiving holiday. From Nov.
24-30, flyers who log in will be taken to eBay’s holiday-themed homepage and invited to “complete your holiday shopping while still en-route to your Thanksgiving destination.”
-
Car maker Lexus wrapped up one week of complimentary Internet on American Airlines flights on Friday. The promotion coincided with the introduction of the 2010 Lexus LS line

Which Phone Is Better: Droid or the Eris? Go With the Droid! The Droid has landed November 10, 2009

We’ve been hearing about the Droid for weeks, getting screen shots and teasers, reviews and comparisons. Finally, it’s come out to play! While many have spent countless hours fantasizing about the joys and uses of such a phone (or maybe that was just me), time for mental window shopping is officially over and now it’s time to buy.

(For anyone who’s had their head buried in the sand for the last month, the Droid is the latest smartphone running on Google’s Android platform and is expected to be a big challenger to Apple’s iPhone.)
But what’s this? Verizon has launched two different Droids? With so much hype going to the Motorola Droid, it’s almost easy to overlook the second Droid phone, HTC’s Droid Eris, which also launched this week. It’s like a younger sibling standing in the shadow, but with the price tag of only $99.99 (after $100 mail-in rebate), it’s bound to catch the attention of many price-conscious buyers. Using Android 1.5, the Droid Eris might not have the same oomph as its older sibling (Motorola operates on Android 2.0). However, it’s still packed with many solid Android features.
Like many phone buying Americans, my budget is tighter than the average consumer’s pants after Thanksgiving dinner. With two Droids to choose from, I had a bit of a mental tug-of-war as to which one to buy. Picking out the calling plan was easy, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that no matter which Droid I chose, it was going to save me money. Like other smartphones, both Droids require the purchase of a data plan (about $29) on top of the regular calling plan. But unlike other Verizon phones where customers might choose to go with a more expensive premium plans for unlimited use of such features as VCAST and VZ Navigator, both Droid phones make the purchase of a premium plan unnecessary. Motorola’s Droid comes preinstalled with Google Maps Navigation, and both the Motorola and the HTC come with a marketplace where you can find a variety of apps for music and videos – many which are free. This means that you can go with a cheaper Verizon calling plan and still get all the bells and whistles, instead of having to go with a higher costing premium plans.
After picking out the calling plan, I was left to decide which Droid I was going to make mine. Since the launch caught me on a week that I was feeling particularly frugal, I opted for the smaller price tag of the HTC Droid Eris. As the first day meet and greet with my new phone went on, I could feel buyers remorse lingering around the back of my mind and I seriously questioned if I should have spent the extra $100, purchasing the Motorola Droid instead.
I curse Verizon for launching the two Droids at the same time, because my brain will not stop with the constant comparison. History has been filled with plenty of famous siblings: Julia and Eric, Michael and Janet, Bart and Maggie… Each one bringing their own talents to the table and star worthy in their own right. Put them under the same spotlight and it’s easy to see which one shines, but it’s only once you separate them that you begin to appreciate that each offers their own gifts. I decided I was being unfair and needed to pretend that Eris’ sexy sibling didn’t exist and to let this younger sibling show off a bit.
HTC headlines the Eris’ customizable features and touts it as the “perfect weekend, travel or pure play phone.” Since I was taking a weekend roadtrip, I decided to put my phone to the test. What I found is that Eris does offer a lot of customizable fun. For example, the seven screens that you can easily scroll through are easily modified to your liking. I was able to organize my social networks, favorite people, and favorite apps all in groupings on different screens.
Listening to and organizing music on Eris is also easy. I browsed music through the Amazon mp3 app and since I already had an Amazon account, purchasing was just a one step process. Once on your phone you can take a song and crop it however you like and make it your main (or specific contact) ringtone.
Another thing I might mention, for those who like to mix business with pleasure, Eris comes preinstalled with Quickoffice, a PDF viewer, the ability to sync with POP3 email accounts, and it will let you keep current with corporate mail and such with Microsoft Exchange Active Sync.
Despite the Droid Eris’ many playful features and business tools, there are a few minor idiosyncrasies that might have me returning my purchase and shelling out the extra money for the sexy sibling (who I am supposed to be ignoring right now.)
The first obvious frustration for me is the lack of a physical key board. My previous phone, the LG enV Touch, spoiled me with its keyboard, making texting something I could almost do with my eyes closed. The Droid Eris offers a touch screen with a virtual keyboard. Though I’ve never been accused of having pudgy fingers, the sensitive and cramped keys make me feel like my fingers have been retaining water like a camel.
It could also be said that dialing on the Eris is a little too easy. Just ask my boyfriend who received four accidental phone calls in a row while he was in a meeting! Since it only requires one touch to set a phone call into motion, a steady hand and small fingers would be needed to select and dial the correct person on the first try.
Another disappointment is the lack of the Google Maps Navigation, which only runs on Android 2.0. True, I was able to find a cheap GPS app for my Droid Eris, but it is primitive in comparison to Google’s app. In order to install an app almost comparable to the Google’s, I would have been required to spend between $30 and $85 and doing that would have rendered my original frugality pointless.
In the end, because of the simultaneous launch date it is hard not to compare the two phones. During the purchase process of my phone the salesperson indicated that the Eris would be upgradeable to 2.0, but they were unable to say when. If this proves to be the case, then perhaps at some future date the upgrade might close the gap of difference between the phones. Until then, those who expect the Eris to be a Mini-me of the Motorola droid are going to be disappointed. However, those who keep in mind that these phones are brothers from another mother or sisters from a different mister, will understand that they’ve inherited different traits.
I am still undecided as to whether I will try and upgrade to a Motoroa Droid, or keep my Eris and bank the money saved. I’m sure I’ll enjoy my Eris should I keep it…. but I can’t help but feel that I’m missing out on the full Droid experience. It’s like that song from Sesame Street, a song from my childhood, that sings “One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong. Can you tell which thing is not like the others by the time I finish my song….” Read the complete original article herehttp://www.nytimes.com/external/venturebeat/2009/11/09/09venturebeat-which-phone-is-better-droid-or-the-eris-go-w-70222.html

In conjunction with Sony Ericsson unveiled three new and exciting mobile phones in the market today that are geared towards consumers looking for mobile entertainment for their phone.

I like the way SE decided to give names to its phones instead of calling them by their model number.

Sony-Ericsson-Kita

The first one is the Kita (or Yari as called outside the country) which is a revolutionary slider phone for gaming. It detects your movements and gestures with its camera sensor to play games similar to what Wii does with its Wiimote. Instead of a remote, you use hand gestures or body movements to play its preloaded games of boxing, tennis, etc. I tried it and it looked really cool.

Here are some of its specs:

  • 262,144 color TFT QVGA (240 x 320)
  • 5 MP camera with autofocus and LED Flash
  • QVGA @ 30fps video recording
  • Accelerometer (good for playing LocoRoco)
  • FM Radio
  • 60MB internal memory with microSD support (up to 16GB)
  • Data connection: 3G, Bluetooth, USB
  • Comes in Achromatic Black and Cranberry White

Retail price of the Sony Ericsson Kita is P12,990

The second phone is the Aino which is geared towards Playstation 3 owners. You can use the Aino to communciate with your PS3 using its WiFi or 3G connections. You can play media from your PS3 to the Aino or even use it as a remote to your PS3.AinoIt comes with a matching Bluetooth headset and desk stand charger.

Here are some of its specs:

  • 16,777,216 color TFT (432×240 pixel)
  • 8.1 MP camera with autofocus, image stabilizer, face detection and LED Flash
  • VGA @ 30fps video recording
  • Accelerometer and limited touchscreen functionality
  • FM Radio
  • 55MB internal memory with microSD support (up to 32GB)
  • Data connection: WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, USB, DLNA, Mac connectivity
  • Comes in Luminous White and Obsidian Black

Retail price of the Sony Ericsson Aino is P23,950

Last but not the least is the gorgeous Satio which is the first Ericsson phone to offer ninth High Definition (nHD), a mobile High Definition TV experience directly to your phone. It has a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen that could play your 16:9 format HD videos while on the go.

SatioIt also has a built-in document reader and editor to handle your Office and PDF documents.

Here are some of its specs:

  • 16,777,216 color TFT touchscreen (360×640 pixel)
  • 12.1 MP camera with autofocus, face detection and xenon flash
  • VGA @ 30fps video recording with video flash
  • Accelerometer
  • FM Radio
  • 128 MB storage; 256 MB RAM with microSD support (up to 32GB)
  • Data connection: WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, DLNA, USB
  • Comes in Black, Silver and Bordeaux

Retail price of the Sony Ericsson Satio is P32,500

Satio, Aino and Kita comes with exclusive content via the Sony Ericsson Entertainment Asia portal where you can get films from Sony Pictures, songs and music videos from Sony Music and game titles from the Gameloft

Google tries its own take on customer service November 6, 2009

Google tries its own take on customer service

Known for its complex algorithms, Google is learning how to add live human support behind its walls.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

With more paid services, Google’s aware that support is needed for questions Not everyone is happy with Google’s attempt at customer service For free services, support is limited to a series of Web pages, FAQs, forums AdWords clients and Google Apps Premium users offered live support

(CNET) — If you rely on a compelling service that happens to be free, what level of customer support are you entitled to receive?

Google is trying to figure that out. Known for using brilliant engineers, complex algorithms and speedy servers to organize online information in a simple and accessible fashion, Google is learning how to add the human touch to its repertoire as customers look for answers that can’t be found on an
FAQ.

Not surprisingly, not everyone is happy with the results. Some advertisers have been complaining about Google’s Web-page-first approach to customer service issues for years, with the most common gripe that they find it exceedingly difficult to reach a real live human being when they have a
problem that isn’t answered on a product Web page.

More recently, Katie Braband, who reported problems with Google Checkout’s handling of transactions at her company, Datto, was just as frustrated by Google’s response to her issues as she was the issues themselves.

“The only e-mails we’ve received response to are pre-generated, it’s very clear there’s no person writing the e-mail,” she said in September.

Google is aware that customer service will play a large role in its growth as it offers more paid services, and seems committed to improving services for those kinds of customers over time. Continue reading herehttp://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/11/05/cnet.google.customer.service/index.html

Google releases Dashboard privacy tool November 6, 2009

Google on Thursday released Dashboard, a feature that allows users to review data the company collects on them.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Google users can find data on themselves with new Dashboard feature Under fire from privacy groups, Google calls the feature unprecedented Advocacy group calls Dashboard a small step, says Google should do more Blogosphere’s reception muted; some say tool won’t change how people use features

(CNN) — Ever wonder what information Google knows about you? With a click or two, now you can find out.

Google released a feature Thursday that lets users see and control data that the Web giant has collected about them. Called Google Dashboard, the service provides an online summary of a user’s Google files — Gmail, Google Docs, Picasa photos and so on — by collecting pre-existing privacy controls in one place.

Dashboard users can review and delete recent Google searches, see recently
opened and shared documents and survey their interactions with other Google-powered sites such as YouTube.

Google, which has come under fire from politicians and privacy advocates for its data-collection practices, announced the service with a blog post headlined, “Transparency, Choice and Control — now complete with a Dashboard!”

“Over the past 11 years, Google has focused on building innovative products for our users,” the company said in its official blog on Thursday. “Today,

with hundreds of millions of people using those products around the world, we are very aware of the trust that you have placed in us, and our responsibility to protect your privacy and data.”
The advocacy group Consumer Watchdog, which has been critical of the amount of personal data Google stores, called the dashboard a small step in the right direction.

“If Google really wanted to give users control over their privacy it would give consumers the ability to be anonymous from the company and its advertisers in crucial areas such as search data and online behavior,” spokesman John M. Simpson said on the group’s Web site.

“The Dashboard give the appearance of control without the actual ability to prevent Google from tracking you and delivering you to its marketers.”

Reviews in the blogosphere Thursday appeared relatively muted for a feature Google described as unprecedented in scale and level of detail.

“Sure, it’s nice to have all these in one place, should you ever want to review all your private information stored at Google at once, but there’s nothing really new about this list,” said Stan Schroeder, a blogger at social media site Mashable. “Unfortunately, it’s also an unpleasant reminder of just how much data you’re giving out to Google.”

Tech blogger Matt Asay, writing for CNET, said most Google users won’t bother with Dashboard because people are willing to sacrifice some Internet privacy in exchange for being able to store and share information online.

“Dashboard leaves Google in the prime position of being able to honestly say that it doesn’t control user data, while still delivering increasingly beneficial services based on that data,” he wrote. “It will not change the way that the vast majority of consumers use Google, but it just might change the way they think about Google.” Read the original article herehttp://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/11/05/google.dashboard/index.html

E-books’ holiday charge November 6, 2009

As sales soar, digital works face season’s crucial test
Technology is stalking your bookcase.
-
It has already taken over your photo albums and emptied your film canisters. It overwhelmed your music collection and flooded Goodwill with CD towers. It canceled your newspaper subscription. (Sniff, tear.)
And now, digital evangelicals believe technology is on the verge of supplanting those dusty, yellowed tomes that weigh three times more than an iPod and don’t even come with any cool free apps.
-
Sales of electronic books jumped 68.4 percent last year and skyrocketed 177 percent to $96.6 million for the year through August, according to the Association of American Publishers. That’s not counting the millions downloaded for free at public libraries, where e-books are fast becoming one of the most popular features. And Amazon has said that its e-book reader, the Kindle, has become the best-selling product on its Web site.
-
But despite the staggering growth, e-books remain just a sliver of the overall publishing industry, at 1.5 percent of the $6.8 billion in sales this year — about on par with audiobooks. And some experts believe that the $200-plus price tag for e-book readers will keep the market from exploding the way MP3s did.
Holiday hopes

This holiday season will be a crucial test of whether e-books can cross over from geeky novelty to mass-market must-have. Major retailers are pushing the format — and, of course, the gadgets they’ve developed to display it. Barnes & Noble unveiled its first electronic book reader last month, with access to all of the retailer’s titles and then some. Amazon and Sony, which make the two best-selling e-readers in the country, have introduced new versions just in time to stuff your stocking. And this holiday, for the first time, Best Buy is devoting store space to educating shoppers about e-readers.

All told, about 1.2 million e-readers are expected to be sold in the last three months of the year — roughly 40 percent of the entire year’s stock. By the end of 2010, industry experts predict, 10 million people will be carrying e-readers. As for the number of e-books that people have read, they’ve lost track.
Sex appeal

Unless, of course, you are 40-something Hilton Henderson of Fairfax, who cannot fathom any reason why he would ever choose to read a book on a screen. Call him old-fashioned. Call him a Luddite. Or, Henderson helpfully suggests, call him a romantic.

A friend of his recently compared books to attractive women — glorious to behold! — and the comparison resonated with him. Reading an e-book, he says, is about as appealing to him as cybersex.
Yes, he went there.
-
“I prefer actually the experience, when reading a book, of using all my senses, like when I experience the world,” Henderson says. “The touch of it, the feel of it, the scent of it.”
All good points. But Sony’s Haber argues that if it’s women you’re after, technology is man’s best friend. Pull out a book in a bar and you look lonely. But whip out a Sony Reader and watch the magic happen.
“If you want to meet a girl,” he says, “don’t get a dog, get a reader.”
