E-Readers Done Right CES Show

Crushed by an Avalanche of E-Books: A slew of new e-book readers (including the much anticipated Plastic Logic Que and iRiver Story), plus Amazon's announcement of a global Kindle DX and the unveiling of Microsoft-centric Blio software for graphics-heavy content, were the major symptoms of e-book fever at CES. If the makers can get the prices down, e-books could really go mass market.

E-Reader Done Right: I've seen a lot of e-readers lately, and in spending some quality time with Spring Designs' $349 Alex Reader, I came to appreciate much about the company's approach to e-readers. It doesn't have the biggest display, nor the most colorful one. But this Android-based device does have a highly usable and well-integrated LCD, and its ability to flow content browsed anywhere on the Web to the e-reader gives this model a unique edge over the competition.

Actually, I Liked This One Better: E-readers were one of the hottest categories of the show this year, and the most compelling new model we've seen is the Plastic Logic Que. This 10.7-inch reader sports a capacitive-touch display that lets you gesture through page turns; it also downloads books from Barnes & Noble's e-book store. It will be available in April in a 4GB Wi-Fi version for $649, and an 8GB version with Wi-Fi and 3G for $799.

At the Showstoppers party at CES in Las Vegas, senior editor Mark Sullivan took a look at Plastic Logic's CUE eReader and HP's first touchscreen netbook, the HP Mini 5102. We’re pitting an iPhone 3GS 16GB with an HTC Hero and a 16GB microSD card. I borrowed the 3GS from @tjmanotoc for the photo comparison here (forgive the worn out Invisible Shield on the 3GS).

Comments: you missed the big screen of the iPhone, the thinner form factor, bigger internal storage. let’s not forget that the iphone lets you install applications until your entire capacity is used up. the hero, i believe will only allow you to install apps in its phone memory. this sorta limits you.

I find Hero´s strong personality goes to business users since it was designed for it. With the collaboration of contacts, twitter and facebook, etc. You can easily see it in each contacts/users.

Iphone is simple in many ways but snappy in performance.
Android market and application are still limited while iphone has numerous softwares found in appstore.

these two phones despite costing close to Php40,000 with all their features and you still can’t even make a video call.. tsk tsk..

i’d rather wait next year, i hear a lot of new more cooler phones are coming out, like ericsson’s xperia x10. more android phones and more nokia phones with capacitive screen with an updated UI.

best bang for the buck for me this year is still the nokia’s 5800 (with the updated firmware), it only cost Php13,000 and you get most of the features of these high-end phone including push email(albeit, it has a resistive screen, stylus and lacks kinetic scrolling),not too mention you can also do FREE video web calls, super sulit =)

I make the video calls direct from cellphone using fring app and my family members back in phils video call me from PC using skype and all of these calls are free unlimited because “all-you-can eat” internet data plan. So, i am optimizing the data plan where ever i go i use video call whether i’m in office or at home.

The Age of the Internet Tablet Is Nigh

December 10th, 2009 from Mashable web: Much like the eReader space has been heating up (with a host of new entrants like the Nook and Que taking on Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s Reader), the tablet device form factor race has seriously begun. Rumors have been flying about both an Apple Tablet and the Microsoft Courier, and now two new companies may have plans to bust out a tablet device: Dell and Asus.

Dell’s forthcoming tablet is still officially in the rumor stages, according to Pocket Lint. It will reportedly run AndroidAndroid and have a 5-inch screen, making it more akin to something like the Archos 5 Internet Tablet than either the Apple Tablet or the Courier, both reportedly featuring bigger screen real estate. Asus, too, who kicked off the wildly popular netbook craze with its line of Eee PCs, reportedly has plans to release an Eee Pad tablet device.

From the juntariman blog: The DNS (Domain Name System) is used to identify you computer when connected to the net. It’s like a phone book in the internet where host names are translated to IP addresses.

via PC World: Windows 7 Starter Edition, the version loaded onto netbooks, isn't supposed to offer "advanced" features like ad-hoc network sharing. In this one case, however, finding this feature is as simple as typing the right phrase into the Start Menu search.

Rafael Rivera's Within Windows blog points out that while the dialog that normally starts the ad-hoc networking process in Windows 7 is disabled in Starter Edition, simply searching for adhoc allows you to start it up. That means being able to connect other computers, smartphones, and Wi-Fi-enabled devices to your netbook when it's got a net connection. It's not quite as convenient as Virtual Wireless Networking, which you can enable with Connectify, but it does get the job done.

USA DC businessman loses thousands after clicking on wrong e-mail

From the Washingtonpost blog : Pay-per-click revenue in the online advertising business may be diminishing for traditional media publishers, but thieves increasingly are earning five- to seven-digit returns when victims click on a booby-trapped link or attachment sent via e-mail.

The latest victim to learn this was Nigel Parkinson, president of D.C.-based Parkinson Construction, a firm with an estimated $20 million in annual revenue that has worked on some of Washington's top gathering places, including the new D.C. Convention Center and the Nationals baseball stadium.

Parkinson said he had an expensive crash course in computer security, when on Nov. 24, he clicked a link in an e-mail purporting to be from the Social Security Administration warning him about potential errors on his Social Security statement. Parkinson fell for the ruse and ended up downloading a copy of the Zeus Trojan, a prolific family of malicious software that criminal gangs have used to great effect to steal tens of millions of dollars from victimized businesses so far this year.

Zeus is primarily a password-stealing Trojan, and in short order the thieves had stolen the credentials Parkinson uses to administer his construction firm's bank account online. From there, the hackers sent $92,000 of Parkinson's cash to nine different money mules, accomplices hired through work-at-home job schemes who are instructed to withdraw the money and wire it overseas (typically minus an eight percent commission) Continue reading here

From the NY Times Fring, which started out offering a VoIP client for mobile phones has added the ability to make and receive video calls from mobile phones, letting you see your friends as you talk to them - for free.

As with the VoIP client, you have to be a Fring user, or "fringster," as CEO Avi Schechter calls them, to download the video client. Fringsters can then talk to friends outside of Fring via various services, including Skype, Twitter, Facebook, last.fm, Google Talk, and AIM through a combined friend list. Fring makes money through banner ads and other advertising mechanisms.

Schechter says the ads are not very intrusive. Fringsters can use the mobile client to live chat, update profiles, and share files.

From the NY Times Video viewing habits are continuing their shift online as more than half of people in the U.S. watched video on the Internet in October, according to comScore.

Hulu is rising rapidly. The video portal for professionally produced content attracted 47 percent more views over the month, at about 850 million views in October compared to 583 million views in September. RP not behind in digital TV technology says a Mediascape official

WHEN it comes to advancement in digital television technology, the Philippines is not far behind, said an official of Mediascape Inc. in a press conference last week.

“The Philippines is recognized as one of the most progressive in digital television technology, considering the number of HD (high definition) channels we have,” said Mediascape chief finance officer Anna Isabel Bengzon in a press conference in Cebu City last week.

Close to Japan

Compared to Japan with nine HD channels, the Philippines comes close, with eight HD channels, which are now available nationwide through Cignal Digital Satellite TV.

Cignal Digital Satellite TV was launched by MediaScape Inc. last July. MediaScape is a subsidiary of MediaQuest Holdings Inc., an investee company of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. group.

She said a 22-inch LCD television set that is already HD compatible costs only P16,900.

Discovery launches science news Web site

Silver Spring-based Discovery Communications announced Monday that it has launched a new Web site dedicated to reporting science and technology news.

Just as Discovery's television shows sometimes focus on the latest scientific findings from far-flung locales around the globe, so will the news site focus on archaeological discoveries or fresh theories about the workings of the universe.

As the site went online Monday morning, its first lead story was about the recent possible discovery of the remains of a Persian army lost in the Egyptian desert about 2,500 years ago. Other items took a Discovery Channel approach to the day's news, such as an interview with a clinical psychologist who discussed factors that sometimes lead to violent outbursts such as the Fort Hood shootings.

We've heard that Web-on-your-TV convergence promise for more than a decade, with ambitious efforts to make it happen including AOL TV and WebTV Networks. Each time, the optimists have been wrong.

This year might be different.
Big TV manufacturers including Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Vizio say that they're poised to revolutionize television this Christmas shopping season: They're about to launch the first major marketing push for a new generation of sets that can easily integrate Web content with traditional TV news and entertainment – without the fuss of connecting the TV to a set-top box.

The Web is increasingly filled with television shows, but finding them can be hard. Clicker, a well-financed startup, believes it can help. On Thursday, the company is rolling out its service, Clicker.com, which it calls a “TV Guide for the Web.”

“If you created TV Guide in 2009 instead of 1953, you’d create something like this,” said Jim Lanzone, Clicker’s chief executive, who previously served as the chief executive of Ask.com, the No. 4 search engine.

Mr. Lanzone said finding a show is not that hard if you know where it is. For example, if you are looking for an NBC, Fox or Disney show, search Hulu and you’re likely to find it if it is available. PC makers this fall are trying to get consumers who want small laptops to move up from low-profit netbooks to larger, costlier models called "ultrathin" or "thin and light." These models are lighter and thinner than many regular laptops, but they have bigger screens and keyboards than most netbooks do.

The slim portables tend to start at around $500 and many fall into the $600 to $900 range. You can easily find bigger, heavier laptops for less. Google offers $5 storage for 10,000 photos

As if Google didn't have enough fingers in our online world, it now wants to be your online photo backup provider. And the company has undercut the prices of competitors to get your business.

Google has offered online storage for two years, but Wednesday itslashed prices drastically to $5 yearly for 20 GB, from $20 for 10 GB. Google says the cost of hard drive storage dropped, enabling it to lower fees.

The 20 GB account is enough room, Google says, for 10,000 full-resolution photos. At $5 a year, Google is much cheaper than online photo sites like Phanfare ($49.99 yearly) and Smugmug ($39.99 to $149.99 yearly), although they both offer unlimited online storage and photo sharing. Online backup services Carbonite and Mozy both offer unlimited backups for about $50 a year. That's right. Smart Communications, the largest mobile communications network in the Philippines, has officially chugged Chikka.com for an undisclosed sum.

What's Chikka?! Wikipedia, please :

Google Has Acquired Gizmo5

Last month Skype was in talks to acquire VoIP startup Gizmo5. It was a perfect backup plan in case all that IP litigation didn’t work out. – Gizmo5’s SIP infrastructure could theoretically replace Skype’s proprietary P2P back end.

After the Skype settlement, though, Gizmo5’s strategic value to Skype sort of plummeted. In the meantime, Google bought them, say multiple sources with knowledge of the deal, for around $30 million in cash. The deal is done, say our sources, and will be announced shortly.

Gizmo5 is a good fit with a number of Google products. Google Talk allows voice calls between users but has no PSTN link to allow incoming or outbound calls to real phones. Gizmo5 does this well already.

And Google Voice is a great VoIP and phone identity service, but they have no endpoint for calls. Gizmo5, which by the way already integrates with Google Voice, is a soft phone end point for Google phone users. In other words, you will be able to make and receive calls to your Google Voice phone number from your computer.
This looks to me like Gizmo5 will be the glue that puts Google Voice and Google Talk together into a single product. And that product looks a lot like a Skype competitor.

Gizmo5, which was founded in April 2003, has raised $6 million to date, plus an unspecified amount from founder/CEO Michael Robertson. Prior to Gizmo5, Robertson gained notoriety with his founding of MP3.com and later MP3tunes (which has led to big music suing both the company and himself personally).
